Abrasive polishes or compounds are the only way to achieve paintwork with crisp, pin-sharp reflections. By removing defects in the paint, you are left with a smooth, level surface that you can then protect with a wax or other type of sealant. Some hand polishes contain fillers which temporarily fill scratches and give the appearance of flawless paint - until the next time it rains or you wash your car! These can only be described as a temporary fix.
